Kata means "form" in Japanese. In karate, kata refers to a specific pattern of defensive and offensive techniques. Each karate kata can be viewed as a volume of combat techniques which was created by martial arts masters to teach, preserve, and pass down martial knowledge through generations.

For some unclear reason, karate tournament judges seem to think that kata of the Naha-te (Goju-ryu etc..) are more impressive to watch.
